The relationship of the blood pyruvic acid level to deficiency states in infancy and childhood.

چکیده
Thiamin, acting in the form of its phosphoric ester co-carboxylase, is an enzyme necessary for the complete metabolism of glucose. In its absence glucose is broken down as far as pyruvic acid, which then accumulates until vitamin B1 is supplied. Peters and Thompson (1934) and Peters (1936) demonstrated that the respiration of avitaminotic pigeon brain was reduced as compared with that of normal birds when either glucose, lactic or pyruvic acid was used as a substrate. The addition of crystalline vitamin B1 raised the respiration to normal. It was shown that the vitamin acted on a three-carbon compound which was pyruvic acid. Thompson and Johnson (1935) found a raised pyruvic acid, measured as 'Bisulphite Binding Substance' (which includes all compounds with carbonyl groups), in the blood of avitaminotic animals. Shortly afterwards Platt and Lu (1936) reported its presence in the blood in cases of acute oriental beri-beri. The establishment of a direct method by Peters and Thompson (1934) and Platt and Lu (1936) for the estimation of pyruvic acid has enabled this stage of carbohydrate metabolism to be extensively studied. Figures for the normal resting blood pyruvic acid in man have been determined by several investigators (Table 1), who all give mean values of less than 1-0 mg. per 100 c.cm. of blood.

متن کاملFurther observations on the significance of the blood pyruvic acid level in infancy.
In a previous paper it was shown (Allibone and Fich, 1946) that toxic and infective states raised the blood pyruvic acid level in spite ofwhat normally would have been an adequate thiamine intake. Ihis phenomenon was particularly noticeable in infancy. Two factors had now to be considered The first was whether the vitamin was being absorbed. Diarrhoea, which obviously would interfere with absor...
متن کاملRelationship between breast feeding in infancy with blood pressure in early
Introduction: Recent studies have shown that breast feeding reduces blood pressure (BP) in childhood, but association of breast feeding and BP in adulthood is not clear. The aim of this study was to evaluate association between breast feeding in infancy with BP in early adult life. Methods: This cross-sectional study was done through random sampling on 384 students aged 18-32 years in Azad un...

Background: Iron deficiency anemia is one of the most prevalent anemia in children and pregnant women in the world. It has recently been revealed that H.pylori infection is one the most important causes of anemia. Materials and Methods: In this analytical study 100 anemic children were analyzed using total Iron, Ferritin, TIBC and H.pylori IgG assay. Data were collected using a questionnaire in...
متن کاملThe relationship between vitamin D and gestational diabetes
Background: Gestational diabetes is one of the common causes of maternal and fetal complications. Due to fetal and maternal complications of diabetes, it is very important to reduce the prevalence of diabetes and its consequences. The relationship between vitamin D deficiency and type 2 diabetes has been reported. There is little information about the relationship between serum vitamin D levels...
